Documents and Accounts to Update After Marriage

All the wedding planning has come to an end, you just had your wedding, and now you get to enjoy married life. But first, you must begin updating documents. To help you know which documents you need to update after getting married, we’ve put together a list to help make things a little easier.

Your Social Security Card

If you decided to change your name, this should be the first document you change. You will need your Social Security card if you need to change anything else moving forward, so it’s crucial you change this first. You will save a lot of time by changing your Social Security first rather than driving to the DMV to change other documents. Your Driver’s License

Once you’ve updated and received your new Social Security card, you can go ahead and get a new driver’s license. You’ll need to bring your Social Security card and marriage certificate to the DMV. Check to see if your marriage license has your current address. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to bring another document that shows your current residency.

Your Passport

Are you planning a honeymoon abroad? If so, make sure you update your passport. Airlines will not allow you to fly if your ticket and passport have different names. If you are going on your honeymoon right after your wedding and you have yet to receive your marriage license, make sure to book your flight in your maiden name. That way, you’re still able to fly and enjoy your dream honeymoon!

Your Financial Institution Information

If you changed your name, you’ll need to let your financial institution know so they can update your accounts. Your name should be updated on your bank account and credit and debit cards. If you’d like, you can open a joint account with your spouse or add them to an existing account.

For changing the name on your cards, call the number on the back of your debit or credit card. You will most likely have to mail, upload, or email a photo of your driver’s license and marriage certificate to update your name.

Your Payroll Information

Inform your employer of any changes to your name. Your employer or payroll provider will most likely move you into a new tax bracket, so make sure you inform them of any changes to your name.

Your Retirement Accounts

You’ll need to update the name on your retirement accounts if you change your last name after getting married. You’ll also want to update the beneficiaries on your accounts. Both you and your spouse might want to designate each other as the beneficiary on your accounts to receive assets.

Your Vehicle Title and Registration

When you go to the DMV, you can update your license and registration together. You will need to bring your current title if you are wanting your new name to be on it. Make sure you already have an updated Social Security card and marriage certificate before going to the DMV, or else you won’t be able to get anything completed there.
