Save on Your Summer Energy Bills

The weather is finally warming up, but with that means we must start turning on the A/C. Today we’re going to talk about how you can keep cool while keeping your energy bill down.

Check Your Air Conditioner

Before you turn on your air conditioner for the summer, make sure it’s working properly. If your A/C unit is slacking, your energy bill will only keep increasing. Having a functioning A/C unit is one of the best things you can do to help save on your energy bill.

Close Doors and Vents

Do you have the A/C working harder to reach rooms that you aren’t even using? If so, now is the time to go close the door and close the vent in that room. There’s no need to spend money on cool air in rooms that you don’t need the cool air.

Open Your Windows at Night

If you live in an area where it cools down at night, turn your A/C off and open your window. You can naturally cool down your room while saving money on your energy bills. On top of this, keep your blinds closed during sunny, warm days. Blocking out the sun will help avoid the heat from warming up rooms that you aren’t using.

Adjust Your Thermostat

You might want to consider setting your thermostat at a temperature just cool enough to keep you comfortable. If you aren’t home during most of the day, your A/C doesn’t need to be running full blast all day. Have your thermostat set at a temperature that is a little higher when you’re away, that way you’re not wasting money on air when you’re gone.

Use Fans Instead of A/C

Ceiling fans can help save a lot of energy compared to using an air conditioner. Fans don’t necessarily cool the air, but they do help you feel less warm when near one. This is because they pull body heat away from your skin, making you feel more comfortable. If it’s too warm to open your window at night, having a ceiling fan on is another great option to help cut back on your energy bills.

Use Cold Water

Did you know that you can save on your energy bills if you use less hot water? If able, wash your laundry with cold water and make sure you are washing full loads. Read our blog  “Tips to Water Down Your Water Bill” to learn more about how you can save on your water bill this summer.

Plant Trees and Bushes

Having tall trees or bushes around your home can significantly decrease the temperature in your home. Think about how different it feels walking from the sun into the shade. There’s usually a significant difference and your house will feel that difference if there are plants providing it shade.
