What Type of Home is Best for You?

So, you’ve finally decided to purchase a home. This is an exciting time that also comes with a lot of important decisions related to the homebuying process. Whether it be your budget or the location of the home. These are all important factors that need to be decided when deciding on a home. One area that people tend to forget about when making homebuying decisions is the type of home that they should be looking for. Learn more about different types of homes to decide which one is best for you.

  • Condominium (Condos) – Condos come at a range of price points, but condos can be a cheaper option compared to a traditional home. These homes tend to be smaller as well. Condos are shared buildings, like apartments, but are normally larger than typical apartment sizes. This type of home is normally good for a one- or two-person household. Condos are also a good option if you don’t want to worry about things like yard maintenance.
  • Duplex/Townhouse – Duplexes and Townhomes are another type of shared unit home. What makes these different then condos is the fact that there is only one other unit attached. These tend to be good starter homes for individuals who are new to homebuying. When deciding to purchase a home like this, it is important to do some research on the unit that is shared with your future unit. Things like who lives there, how fast the turnaround is, and other things related to the neighbors that you will be sharing a wall with.
  • Mobile Home – Mobile homes or manufactured homes are another type of home that is available for purchase. If you’re interested in purchasing a mobile home, it is important to remember that the typical way that the homebuying process works for this type of home is a little different. Unlike purchasing a classic home, when you purchase a mobile home, you are purchasing the home, but not the land that it sits on. The land is normally rented out to you, and you will have to pay a monthly rent to keep your home on the land.
  • Ranch – A ranch is a common type of home that is good for multi-person households. These types of homes are one story (plus a basement) and tend to have 2 to 3 bedrooms. Ranch homes are typically smaller and more modest than popular multi-level homes. But you can find large open-concept style ranch houses as well.
  • Split level/Two story homes – Split level and two-story houses tend to be larger than ranch homes because there is always a second level to these homes. These homes are good for bigger families that need more rooms than an average ranch home. Split level houses tend to have around 3 to 4 bedrooms. Also, the majority of the house features are in the basement of the home. These homes split living spaces between the levels of the home. Two story homes tend to have the community living spaces on the first floor. While the bedrooms are on the second floor.

These are just a few of the types of homes that are available to purchase. Ultimately, it will be your decision what home will work for you and your finances.
