How to Give When Finances Are Tight

Supporting the causes you care about doesn’t have to mean making a big donation—especially when money is tight. Here’s how you can help make an impact when your wallet doesn’t have the means to give away extra money.

Volunteer

One of the most valuable things you can give is your time. Volunteer for organizations that could use your help. Most organizations could use peoples help, especially during the holidays. Reach out to organizations to see what kind of help they could use. You could be doing things like serving meals, preparing care packages, helping with events, cleaning up garbage on the streets, and much more.

Consider thinking about the talents you have. Maybe you’re good at sewing and could make blankets for shelters. Inform organizations who could benefit from the talents you have to offer that you will help them out.

Host a Fundraiser

If you have some extra time on your hand, consider hosting a fundraiser. You could organize a bake sale or yard sale to raise funds for an organization you value. By word of mouth, small donations can add up quickly, helping you make a big impact. Let as many people as possible that you can think of, know of a future fundraiser you plan on hosting and have them spread the word to people they know. This is a great way to get as many participants as you can and really help organizations.

If you don’t want to oversee hosting a fundraiser, you can participate in other fundraising events. There are plenty of charity events you can attend, such as, walks or runs. Find some that interest you and show up to give your support.

Declutter and Donate

Do you have items around your home that you don’t use anymore? Many people and organizations could use those items. Go through your home and make a pile of things you would like to donate. Homeless shelters are a great place to donate clothing, toys, and books. They could especially use them during the winter months, so gather your warm clothes that aren’t getting much love anymore and donate them for another person to appreciate.

If you would like to help the animals in the shelters, you can donate blankets, as most shelters are usually accepting these.

Not only will your house thank you, but so many other people will too! You are decluttering your house while blessing the lives of many others.

Random Acts of Kindness

Random acts of kindness can go a long way, and they usually don’t involve any money. Consider doing things like cooking a meal for someone in need, spending time at a senior center or nursing home, or shoveling your neighbor’s driveway. All these acts can greatly impact another person, while uplifting you as well.
